Every time you get behind the wheel, there is the risk of an accident.  There are so many concerns on the roads and highways, many of them new since many adults began driving, sometimes decades ago. 

We are talking about new risks from texting while driving and talking on cell phones.  Texting on the road has been illegal for some time now.  Effective July 1, talking on your phone while driving (except in hands free mode) is also now against the law.  

There is also some evidence that during this pandemic, with less traffic on the road, people feel they can driver faster, resulting in more serious accidents, especially when they involve big trucks.   

Couple all of that with new teen-drivers who sometimes think they are invincible, and the risks become higher.  Drivers ages 16-19 are more likely to be involved in car accidents than any other age group, according to the Centers for Disease Control. 

Driving while under the influence also increases in the summer months.   

The fact is, right now we are in the middle of a span of approximately 100 days, when car accidents and resulting injuries are at their highest on average.  This time span starts on Memorial Day weekend and ends on the weekend of Labor Day.   

Of course, a gentle reminder is in order that you should make sure to practice safe driving all year round and realize that just because the weather is nicer does not mean that there aren’t very real driving dangers.
